Christiansholm Fortress
Christiansholm Fortress was part of Christian IV’s plan for the defence of Kristiansand (then Christianssand) when the city was founded in 1641. Fredriksholm Fortress, further out in the fjord, was completed in 1658, but did not provide sufficient protection for the gradually growing city. The eastern harbour was also unprotected. The fortress was built between 1667-1672 with an angled defence wall. Inside, there is a tower with a diameter of 35 m and 5 m thick walls. For 200 years, the location, including the extensive fortifications, made Kristiansand a strategically important city.
