Acid tower, Hydro
The one acid tower that remains in Rjukan is listed by the Cultural Heritage Act, but this one stone we are sending is, by definition, not protected. The stone is still part of the world heritage, as it has been used in one of the other 31 acid towers from 1910-1911 that are now demolished. Originally, there were two tower houses with a total of 82 such towers in granite.
The tower has a ten-sided section, with an outer diameter of approximately seven meters. The tower is about 23 meters high and is made up of granite blocks of 100x224x20 cm, with a total weight of approx. 2000 tons. The acid tower’s function was the absorption of nitrogen into nitric acid.
Protection: Rjukan-Notodden Industrial Heritage was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
