Tøyen main farm
Stone from the restoration of the staircase at Tøyen main farm, Oslo.
Tøyen main farm is known from the Middle Ages. It had changing owners until 1812, when it was transferred to King Frederik VI, who donated it to the newly established University of Christiania. It was originally intended to add the university to Tøyen, but instead, loop properties were built for housing for professors (“professors’ town”).
The main farm is now located in the University’s botanical garden. The two-storey main building is constructed of panelled timber and was first referenced in 1721, partly built on a basement from the 17th century. It has two single-storey side wings. It was given its current appearance mainly by a reconstruction in 1779. The farm is listed. The dirt road around the farm was laid out as a botanical garden in the 1820s. The university’s Natural History Museum with botanical garden is located on the grounds of Tøyen Farm.
