M. Peterson & Søn built the Moss Cellulose and Paper factory in 1882-83.Previously, there had been an ironworks and mill operation on the site and in the area called Møllebyen since the Middle Ages. The factory was the origin of what was previously known as “Mosselukta” (an unpleasant smell that saturated Moss). It is gone today.
Retrieved stone comes from the ground under and around gas tanks on the edge of the factory area. Housing for the workers was situated close to the gas tanks. The gas tanks and parts of the factory have been demolished, but a large part remains and is being transformed for other purposes, such as housing and commercial use.
