The stone was used in the wall of an old sawmill.

Stone found in the wall ruins of the first industrial enterprise to be started in Birkenes. Flak sawmill was built in 1572 by lord Erik Munch. The sawmill was located on the Tovdal River just below the large Flakkefossen waterfall. The stone has probably been part of the walls of the sawmill. Flak sawmill was one of the first sawmills to be built in Aust-Agder. Timber floating in the Tovdal River has taken place for several hundred years, and this sawmill was built in connection with the floating of timber. Later, newer sawmills were built on the same site, but they have all been closed.
