Fredriksten Fortress
The donated stones come from the outer wall of Fredriksten Fortress in connection with restoration work.
Fredriksten is the largest and most important border fortress inNorway andis a listed structure under the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. Its construction began in 1661 after Bohus Fortress and Bohuslän were ceded to Sweden in 1658. The fortress is made of stone that various farmers brought there.
The area around the fortress has been attacked by Swedish forces six times. The most famous being the attack in 1718, when the Swedish king Charles XII was shot and killed here. Fredriksten also had great importance for Norway during the war for Norwegian independence in 1814 and the peaceful dissolution of the union in 1905.
It was closed as an operational fortress in1905 andis today a popular destination and recreational area for visitors as well as for locals.
