The quartzite quarry at Mårnes is operated by Elkem ASA, a Chinese-owned, Norwegian industrial group with origins back to 1904. The stone has been extracted and donated by the subcontractor Stranda Maskin AS. Quartzite was discovered here in 1949, and extraction began in 1970. Today, the quartzite is transported both to the Salten region and to other Elkem plants, as well as to external customers in the smelting industry and for industrial purposes. The main product from the quartz quarry is crushed and washed quartzite (10–50 mm). In addition, quartzite sand (0–10 mm) is produced. No chemicals or additives are used in the processing of the quartzite.
