Vemork hydrogen factory

Wall fragment from the heavy water cellar at the old hydrogen factory at Vemork, 1928.
The wall fragment was recovered in connection with the excavation of the heavy water cellar at Vemork. The fragment is from an interior wall at the scene of the risky sabotage operation, where the heavy water cells at Vemork were blown up, and the occupying power was prevented from developing a possible atomic bomb, on the night of 28 February 1943. The cellar is listed under the Cultural Heritage Act, and this fragment is, in principle, part of the protection. The use for this purpose is nevertheless unproblematic, and has been clarified with the cultural heritage section of Vestfold and Telemark County Council.
