The new customs office is approximately 50 metres from the Finnish border, which is Finland’s northernmost point. The old customs station was located a couple of kilometres into Norway, in a listed building from the 1950s.

Polmak is located on the south side of the Tana River at the national border with Finland. The Tana River is Norway’s third-longest river, and for long stretches forms the national border between Norway and Finland.

Polmak (Northern Sami Buolbmát, Kven and Finnish Pulmanki) is located in the Tana municipality in Eastern Finnmark. The municipality belongs to the administrative area for the Sami language. Tana is a trilingual municipality where Norwegian, Sami and Swedish are used. Deanu musea — Tana Museum for River Sami culture is located in Polmak.
