The donated stones come from Langgata’s time as a pedestrian street, 1983-2015.

Langgata was originally a footpath and a bridle path along the beach. It was granted status as a main road between Stavanger and Jæren in 1849. The pavements were paved with stones from 1886 to 1910. The historic Swiss-style buildings that characterise Langgata today were built during this time. From the 1920s onwards, parts of Langgata were paved with square stones, while the rest of the street was asphalted for the city’s anniversary in 1935.

In the years 1983-84, Langgata became a pedestrian street and was paved with cobblestones, field bricks and square concrete slabs. The centre of Sandnes is today characterised by a patchwork of different street floors.

In 2015, Langgata was paved with dark granite slabs.
